The Code Environment in Los Angeles

California operates under the California Building Code (CBC), currently the 2025 edition based on the 2024 IBC with California amendments. The CBC is adopted statewide and then further amended locally. The Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) adopts the CBC as its base and adds significant local amendments through the Los Angeles Municipal Code. 

For fire prevention, the California Fire Code and the LAFD's local amendments govern fire protection requirements. Los Angeles has specific provisions around high-rise buildings, fire access, and fire protection system design that differ from both the base CBC and from other California jurisdictions.
