Building Code Consulting in Denver

At Campbell Code Consulting, we help architects and developers working on Denver-area projects navigate the Denver Building Code from early design through permit approval. We offer full code consulting and fire protection design services across Colorado.
Let's Work Together
Denver and the surrounding areas have been among the most active construction markets in the country, with a strong pipeline of multifamily residential, senior living, higher education, and mixed-use projects driving demand for experienced code consultants. Campbell Code Consulting has direct project experience in Colorado, working alongside architects, developers, and design teams on complex projects across the state.

We provide comprehensive fire protection and life safety code consulting and fire protection engineering design services for Denver-area projects.

Our Experience in the Denver Market

Campbell Code Consulting has delivered fire and life safety code consulting and fire protection engineering services on multiple Colorado projects. These include the CSU Andrew Clark Building, a 365,000 GSF academic and research renovation at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, and the UC Boulder Ekeley Science renovation, a 26,000 SF laboratory renovation at the University of Colorado Boulder.

The Denver Code Environment

Denver operates under its own building and fire code framework, administered by Denver Community Planning and Development (CPD). The 2025 Denver Building Code is based on the 2024 IBC with Denver-specific amendments and applies to permit applications submitted on or after June 13, 2025. The Denver Fire Code is based on the 2024 IFC with local amendments.

Denver's local amendments include several notable modifications to standard IBC provisions, and Denver CPD has specific plan review expectations around fire protection, egress, and smoke control documentation. High-altitude considerations also factor into fire protection system calculations, including sprinkler hydraulics and smoke control system sizing.

How We Can Help

  • Plan Reviews: we review your design documents and flag building and fire code issues before you submit for permit, saving time and reducing costly late-stage design changes.
  • Code Reports: we provide project-specific code reports summarizing all applicable requirements, so your team has a single, organized reference rather than having to hunt through hundreds of pages.
  • On-Call Consulting: questions come up throughout design. We are available for calls, emails, and meetings to answer code questions as they arise.
  • Engineering Judgments: for conditions not directly addressed by a UL-listed assembly or where code interpretation is needed, we provide formal engineering judgments to satisfy AHJ requirements.
  • Code Modifications / Alternate Means & Methods: when your design does not fit neatly into prescriptive code requirements, we help prepare and submit code modification requests to the local AHJ.
  • Fire Protection Design: our licensed fire protection engineers design fire sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, and fire alarm systems for your projects, all completed in Revit for full BIM coordination.
  • Performance-Based Design: egress modeling, smoke control system sizing, fire modeling, and stair pressurization analysis under IBC Section 909 and related provisions.
  • Accessibility Code Consulting: compliance reviews for ADA, FHA, and ICC A117.1 accessibility requirements applicable to your project.

The Denver Construction Market

Denver's development market includes a broad mix of Type I and Type III construction. High-rise residential towers downtown and along the South Platte corridor, mid-rise podium and wrap multifamily throughout the metro, and senior living communities expanding across the suburbs. The University of Colorado system and Colorado State University generate steady higher education project activity. Front Range municipalities including Aurora, Thornton, Westminster, and Lakewood each have their own permitting processes and code interpretations.
