The Code Environment in Dallas

Like all Texas municipalities, Dallas adopts and enforces its own version of the model codes. Dallas currently enforces the 2021 International Building Code with Dallas amendments, and the 2021 International Fire Code as its fire code.

Texas does not operate under a single statewide building code. Each city establishes its own code adoption and amendment ordinances, which means that what is acceptable in Dallas may differ from Fort Worth, Houston, or San Antonio. For projects in Dallas proper versus the surrounding county jurisdictions (Collin, Denton, Tarrant), the specific AHJ and applicable codes should be verified early in design.
