The Code Environment in Austin

Austin currently enforces the 2024 International Building Code (IBC 2024) with local amendments, adopted by City Council in 2025. Texas does not operate under a single statewide building code. Instead, each municipality adopts and amends its own version of the model codes, which means your Austin project requires a careful reading of both the base IBC and the city's local modifications. The Austin fire code is based on the International Fire Code (IFC 2024), also with local amendments.

One important item to note: Austin has adopted a provision allowing a single exit stairways in certain multifamily buildings, which is a notable local amendment from the base IBC that has significant design implications.
